I'm with Matt to an extent re: Obama. The first term has the earmarks of a wasted opportunity, though things are SLOWLY getting better (don't get me wrong, there's a hell of a lot of work left to do and it's gonna be quite awhile before we get back in the swing of things economically, but things are improving a bit).

A huge amount of the blame, though, has to go to Congress and the constant pissing matches between both parties. They're the ones that have wasted so much time, money, and legislation on partisan bullshit that I'm amazed anything gets done anywhere. Obama gets his share of the blame, too, but to paraphrase Bobcat Goldthwait: "Blaming the president for the way thing are is like blaming Ronald McDonald when you get a bad cheeseburger. Neither one of 'em runs the company."

Dark Knight Returns: Part 1.

Good lord does it nail the tone.

The cast is pretty great, with the standout being the obvious choice of Peter Weller to voice Bruce/Bats. It takes a couple of scenes to get used to some of the other members of the film, mostly because most fans have already given their own voice to these characters for years. But after that, everyone really does a great job (though the mutant leader's line-reading when facing down the Bat tank is a little odd, it is the only moment that really stood out as being off).

The score is probably the best I've heard in a long time (parts of Total Recall, Blade Runner, the recent Zimmer/Newton Howard material, and Robocop can definitely be heard in here). Chris Drake has really knocked it out of the park on this one. Heroic and bombastic when necessary, but with deliberate and futuristic sorts of tones when needed to help convey the rot of the city.

The mutant leader, whom I'd always thought was just the wrong side of goofy looking in the comic, is truly formidable in this first chapter.

To go along with that aspect, the fights and the sound design accompanying them are brutal. It's all brutal, really. This shit is LOUD and fucking MEAN.

It's all befitting of ol' crazypants' love letter to the character, and the endnote really left me incredibly hyped for the conclusion.
