San Antonio sucks? No way. Probably the most beautiful city in Texas. And the burbs there aren't total misery. I would LOVE to retire in Boerne. And the Tex-Mex in SA is awesome.
And Austin....ugh. Artificially high cost of living, an inflated population created by horrible college children that ruin 6th Street 8 months of the year, and bad flooding due to the hilly terrain but inability to create legit sewer systems. And HORRIBLE "Tex-Mex." That said, it's light years ahead of Dallas.
I still contend, Houston is where it's at. Everyone poo poos Houston because it's ugly (it is - instead of Keep Austin Weird it's Keep Houston Ugly) but our cost of living is low as shit, the food is amazing, we're massive so finding good bars, concerts, clubs is no chore at all. Austin got it's reputation thanks to being a pretty place (though it is INFESTED with homeless now) and the college kids like pretty. College is hip, so Austin became hip. Besides, St. Thomas girls > UT girls any day.
San Antonio suffers the same issues as Houston, in that neighborhoods can complete transform block to block, and it has expanded way to fast (second largest city in Texas now) and traffic can be HORRIBLE.
When I was at Ft. Hood, I had several friends stationed at Ft. Sam Houston... and I would visit them as often as possible. San Antonio is a very nice city, and it's service friendly. They make people in uniform feel welcome... not like some other places I've been.
