Obligatory DMB mention- "Before These Crowded Streets". Not only is it the culmination of what their songwriting and musicianship was building to under Steve Lillywhite's wing, with the small interludes between songs it works as a fantastic suite from top to bottom. Alcoholism and depression be damned, Glen Ballard caused about 41 million steps backward with the follow-up "Everyday".
I'd also throw "Graceland" and "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner" on this here list.
