  • A Nightmare on Elm Street - Haley Edition

Pedestrian. That's about all I can muster. Which is a shame, because individual ideas are interesting and haven't been explored in Freddy lore. But they're not explored here either. Samuel Bayer has a keen eye and Rooney Mara is well above average for this sort of material, but there are fundamental flaws that keep it from rising anywhere above (or sometimes even at) 'meh'. Chief among them being Freddy simply isn't scary as shown here. The filmmakers up the backstory but fail at the first hurdle with, frankly, ugly (and not in a good way) makeup for Freddy in monster mode. The occasional nice kill can't earn back what should have been the easiest win for the film - the icon.

Wonderful, and still completely worthy of all of the accolades that it has earned over the years. I still prefer the songs in 'the Little Mermaid' ('Kiss the Girl' and 'Under the Sea' simply cannot be topped) but the film itself is flawless. Gorgeous animation, strong voice acting, and a perfectly told story.
Gaston may be my favourite Disney antagonist.

      • Gaston also has the best song in the film (in my opinion, anyways).

          • Yeah, no question. Again, one of my favourite Disney songs full stop (A Whole New World, if you're asking).

            • Aladdin was the bomb, son.

Hell, all of the Disney output from like 89 to 94 was amazing.

Speaking of classics, I felt compelled to watch Shawshank again after Empire's look back at the film adaptations of Different Seasons. Fuck any haters, backlashers, anyone that doesn't think this deseerves its place among the all-time greats. I aspire to write something half as well-written and well-constructed as Darabont did here. And the cast is faultless. I don't normally like Tim Robbins, but Darabont used him perfectly, playing up every bit of childlike innocence and mystery that he has when required (the scene when Andy puts Mozart on might be the best acting he's ever done). A glorious film and one that never fails to grip, entertain and move me.
Jesus, Ben. Get out of my brain.

Fuck the haters, it's amazing...and I HATE Tim Robbins.

Back in college, I took my girlfriend to see 'Aladdin' two weeks before it came out. They were doing a sneak preview of it at select theaters and I surprised her with it...we just showed up at the theater (EARLY) and got tickets. It was a good thing that we got there early too...a lot of mothers w/children were turned away, leading to a whole lotta screaming in front of the ticket counter.

So yeah. We saw it and loved it, and it turned into one of the single best dates that we ever had as a couple. We also had the fun experience of being able to tell EVERYONE about how great it was.

                  Yes, I got laid.
Yes, I earned major, MAJOR points from my girlfriend's sorority over this.

                  Good memory.

                    • I haven't seen 'Aladdin' in a long time. Does it hold up or does it all seem pretty dated? Just curious.

                      • Its still brilliant. The one thing that has aged it was a large part of its initial success - Robin Williams' Genie. A lot of his shtick doesn't fly any more.

BUT, purely from a structural standpoint, the film is a masterpiece.

                        • That's really awesome, Matt.

As for Williams' comedy relief, I just try to imagine him as the first djinn to imagine and subsequently use cocaine.

It doesn't really distract from the stale routine, but it at least explains his mania.
