Jake, it depends on the level of gun you want and which playthrough you're on.
1st playthough:
13-16: save inside Sledge's Safehouse, and then zone out and run around to the hill and pop the chest. Exit world (leave current game), enter world, and repeat.
16-20s: save inside Headstone Mine, zone out and run to where the combat rifle parts were and pop the chest (usually will generate 19-25 level weapons). Exit world, enter world, and repeat.
Early to mid 20s: New Haven has 5 chests that you can pop all near to each other. Exit world, enter world, and repeat.
Mid to early 30s: Save at the Underpass in West Rust Commons, (if you have the Moxxi DLC, check out Underdome's vendor machines, sometimes it will populate awesome weapons and mods, and then zone back to check the vendors in WR), take the car out to East Rust Commons and follow the right wall. Kill mobs and pop that chest. Exit world, enter world, and repeat.
2nd or more playthrough:
