nathan, if i were you, i'd save up the money for a really good set up. although, if you were me, you'd want to spend almost 2-3k on your set up. hahaha. no really though, don't go with one stop shop home theaters if you're looking for great sound set up. and if you really don't care, sony has worked for ari.
Yeah, but 2-3 K on a setup is ridiculous if you are like most people who actually open up movies and don't have disposable income like you do. Hah. The best thing to do would be spend as much as you can on a decent reciever. Then piece together the rest when you have money. The reciever is the key. Well that and the center speaker. For cereal!

I love my little setup. decent reciever, awesome upconverting dvd player (which is pointless now that I have a PS3) and subpar speakers. But it does the trick. honestly, it's all about the tv anyways.

Well, after employing a bit of the Google, it seems that "out of the box" setups are lame-o, and the receiver is where its at. Pretty sure mine is not 5.1. Bummer.

now wait. ARe you talking out of the box as in reciever/dvd player all in one things? Because mine was out of the box, but has a decent reciever, dvd player , 5.1 speakers. The only thing I would like to upgrade at some point is my reciever for 7.1, but that can wait until I own a house.

out of the box or one stop shop home theaters aren't great because you don't get to really choose your set up. go with a really good receiver and decent speakers.
Totally true Nerdious, but if money is a factor then one stop works perfectly. Trust me, had I had more money I would have pieced my ultimate setup together, but after dropping 1400 on the tv, 500 seemed good enough for my audio. And as I get complaints from my neighbors and whatnot, it's not too shabby. My only real problem is my shoddy center channel speaker. I would like to upgrade that soon. Otherwise, the 5.1 is fucking flawless, 360/ps3 games sound great and no real complaints on my end.
But yes like as with all electronics for the most part: "You get what you paid for"

Unfortunately I spent a good bit of my income tax return on Rock Band, a new crash cymbal, and some other crap I can't remember. So money is certainly a factor.

Which I have been keeping in mind in this thread. I mean sure, you could spend 200 on one speaker that would be badass, but you'd only have one speaker.
