Ok, I'm a tad baked, so bear with me:
Video from DVD -----> TV
Optical from DVD----->Either vid 1 or vid 2 on your reciever
then depending on which you picked (vid 1 or vid 2) select that on your reciever and make sure the input is set to OPT IN."Looking like Nic Cage dressed in Kurt Cobain's closet. I mean that as a compliment" - BillyG

Now drop the pants and take the bacon!

Just unplugged the optical cable from the DVD and plugged in the one for the 360. Same input, didn't change anything and when the 360 came on the display showed the rear speakers.Touch it. Touch my fuzziness! It's like petting a kitten!

maybe this will work...
Plug in your dVD player again, turn that bitch on with out a dvd in it. Hit the display button on your remote for dvd. There will be an options list. Find the optical sound option and make sure it's on and tweak your settings there. Only thing I can think of."Looking like Nic Cage dressed in Kurt Cobain's closet.
