I don't believe I accused you or anyone HERE of doing that. I kind of meant in society as a whole. But I could see why you might have thought otherwise, I could have worded it more clearly.

The simple fact is that in their own weird, round-about ways, Sarah Palin is successful. Michelle Bachman is successful. And Oprah is successful. Doesn't mean I, or all women as a whole, agree with everything (or in my case, anything) they say or do.

Y U WIMMENS SO CRAZY. I keed I keed. I would actually be surprised if any of the women here agreed with these yahoo's. You guys are bright, witty, and damned fun ladies. They are not, which is baffling considering how successful they are.

Lisa, if I offended you with my remarks, then I sincerely beg your pardon.

It has not been a good week for me, and I let my emotions get the better of me. For that I apologize to you and all of you.

Okay. It's been a bad week for me as well. My concern is that a "Fuck Oprah" thread, which is fine, and which I have no issues with, doesn't turn into a general, all-purpose "Fuck women" thread. I do what I can to dissuade the pile-ons, no pun intended.

I kind of admire Oprah on one level, as she went from "meh" actress to the head of a damn impressive entertainment/media empire. On another level, however, she definitely is cut from the same cloth as your Jerry Springer or Maury Povich types. The vid Michael posted is apt - she does huckster with the best of 'em, playing more on emotions and gut feelings, rather than calm rationalization and logic.

Lisa's point is valid - yes, her demographic is largely female, but no way in hell do all women watch that show. My mom doesn't, my wife doesn't, in fact very few women I know bother with that show. Oprah's show appealed more to some women who had serious issues (relationships, careers, etc.) that would watch the show to find some solace from their own problems, or find a subject they could relate to. Peg Bundy on Married With Children was the type of lady that basked in Oprah's glow.

As for the original point Iggy made re: the wedding stuff. Yeah, letting the guy plan the entire thing is a recipe doomed for failure, and I'm amazed Oprah OK'ed that idea. That was a blatant, obvious attack on us guys and if anything, drives home the point that weddings are definitely the one area where the ladies should take charge. Weddings are huge moments for some ladies - it's THEIR big day, the day they have dreamed of since they were little kids. A day filled with love, romance, happiness, etc. where the bride is the center of attention. As it should be. Having a guy who doesn't know his bride's color choices, taste in decor or food, her sense of style, etc. do all the work for her is just asking for him to have the bride cut his head off. Only reason Oprah would back that idea is for the drama that would result, as drama = ratings.

Also, Iggy, having Oprah be your life coach is a major league no-no. Sure, Oprah can pump out all sorts of advice, as she gets to live the high life without any of the blowback from her suggestions. Also, I'm in agreement with you re: Dr. Phil. I've heard that guy on the radio, and his advice is for shit.

Precisely. One thing I do hate about other women is this Bridezillas bullshit, this whole "It's THE BRIDE'S day!" horsecrap. Newsflash - two of you are getting married, so it's BOTH of your day.

So what does Oprah gain from this? One, ratings - as in, let's watch the big stupid guy fuck up his own wedding. And two - it further perpetuates that bullshit attitude that it's the bride's day, and that the groom has nothing to do with it, and should just keep out of it. It cements that "Just put on the fucking tux and show up" mentality, and truthfully, women who have that attitude shouldn't be getting married to begin with. It's "Yuk yuk, look at the stupid man", and setting him up to fail, because no, guys aren't going to know about these things. So while I don't like some of the jokes about women, I'm not totally heartless about the guys either. If either side is getting an unfair break, if either side as a whole is being painted with a rather broad brush, then it's no good regardless of who it is. It's no good to stomp women down and reduce them to nothing but harpies with tits and pussies and nothing more to offer. But retaliation back at the men is wrong as well, to set the men up as "clowns who'll just RUIN your wedding, and this is why women are really smarter - Oprah said so!"

But it's easy to happen. It's a very fine line to go from "Yeah, Oprah sucks!" to "And another thing WOMEN do is..."
