    Re: netflix

i see where you're coming from now. and now i never bothered with an hd download from the 360. fuck the 360. hahaha. and i've NEVER had a problem with my downloads off comcast. a lot of the issues i hear about comcast, from issues with downloads to hd shows, i've never experienced.

also, you're assuming that an hd download is going to cost the same as a disc. you're not putting into consideration that because production is not needed for the digital form, they can cut the cost of the item; at least more than half of the retail price.

netflix is going in the right direction in allowing streaming of the movie as opposed to actual download. that way they can "protect" the media and still allow you to rewatch it again if you wish, provided that some hacker doesn't find another way to make a copy of that stream, which i'm sure they could.

and i like the physical copy as much as the next person, but again, digital forms of media saves on space, time, and sometimes money (the latter depending on whether you use itunes or not).

and again, netflix isn't looking to replace your purchaseable movies. they're just starting to head towards hd downloadable movies in the right way. unlike microsoft. still can't believe you rented a movie from ms' marketplace... and seriously, hot rod? couldn't you have seen that in regular sd?

      Re: netflix

We wanted to test out set. It looked awesome still. But you mention space. And sure, if you are just talking about streaming (i.e. renting media). But let's say I want to "buy" Star Wars in Blu-ray. So I pay, let's say 15 bucks, to download it. Now I have a file that is taking up gigs of space. Let alone the special features, audio, etc. And then let's say something happens to my computer. Are they going to give me the option of re-downloading it>? How many times can I do this?

Streaming is cool, digital downloads fucking suck. I've done enough of that with games, and fucking sucks. When you get a hankering to play a game but you don't have the disc, you then need to download like 10 gigs of BS then update. Fuck that. Give me physical any day of the week.

Haha. I would love Digital to take over, but there are still lots or speedbumps along the way.

The major one being they don't trust their users and limit watching or downloading. Fuck you. I spend the money, I own the shit. Plain and simple. And while I have my ADD like a mofacker, I still enjoy buying hardcopies of things. Just in my nature.

those are great things that microsoft and other companies that are looking to head into digital videos to look into. all i was trying to state was that netflix is heading in the right direction. streaming is great if it's done correctly. and in regards to digital version of games, the only company that seems like it's doing it somewhat right is steam. but that's a different story. if the companies could get over their issue with drm, or at least allow someone to download multiple times, hd downloads would totally take over.

don't get me wrong. i totally agree with the issues you bring up and it's really up to the companies to figure out what's best for the consumer while not losing a lot of money. allowing multiple downloads with drm is fine with me as long it's on multiple sets i can use. otherwise, they need to figure out how to just stream everything and allow you access to unlimited viewings. again, netflix is just heading in the right direction and as long as others learn from this, hd downloads will be strong in the future.

i too, love buying my movies. but the more i have, the more materialistic i realize i am. which then makes me sad. hahaha.

I'm all for it when we get to the point that you can click on a HD flick, and within a minute it streams, looks great and no buffering. And it's fucking cheap.

                  Re: netflix

reviews already coming in about the roku set for netflix...

                  from boing boing gadgets:
One great feature: the Roku box talks to Netflix.com about how much of a movie you've watched. I started watching Before the Devil Knows Your Dead on the Roku, paused it, then fired it up on Netflix.com the next day exactly where I'd left off.
                  and crunchgear:
On most videos the resolution was sufficiently high that it bordered on DVD quality. There was almost no visible pixellation even on our 46-inch rear projection TV.
i'm just interested mainly because as they stated, it's to supplement their existing catalogue. and since my eee pc can't stream anything, this will be great for me.

                      Re: netflix

                      Will I still get DVDs?

Yes. All of our plans that feature unlimited instant watching include both DVDs and instant watching. Your monthly plan will continue to include as many DVDs as before.

                      How will my plan change?

Your plan doesn't change. The monthly price stays the same and you get the same number of DVDs as before. Watching movies and TV episodes on your TV via a Netflix ready device is included in plans with unlimited instant watching at no additional cost.

                      What does this cost?

Everything you watch comes included in your existing Netflix plan at no extra charge. Like Netflix DVD delivery, with instant movies and TV episodes streamed to your TV via your device there are no late fees, no per-view fees, and no return or expiration dates.

The price of each Netflix ready device varies and is set by the manufacturer. It's a one-time purchase. Once you buy the device, it's yours to keep.
oh snap. i thought it was an extra charge on top of regular montly charge, which, i was totally willing to pay. although, be aware that if you have a laptop or your tv/receiver is attached to your computer, you can just stream these movies over and you don't really have to worry about the box. since i have neither, i'm all for this.

Yeah, I think I'll pass for now. If the PS3 or 360 one doesn't happen, I may have to grab one though. As I don't feel like networking all of my PCs to my tv at the moment.

                        I fucking lazy.

rob, you weren't talking about streaming netflix movies onto the 360 from vista premium media center or was there an announcement saying that netflix would offer a program for the 360 itself?
