  • And people. You want to see a GREAT gangster movie?

Go rent Johnnie To's The Mission. Finest gangster movie for me. Yeah, it's from HK, and it has subtitles, but trust me. You will not regret it. After 20 minutes, you'll be "?" After 40 minutes, you'll salivate.

I don't disagree with this, per se, but Scorsese's use of technique in that final third is, frankly, a game-changer. He keeps the predictability from being boring. I'd say the last 30 mins is among the most incredible directorial work he's done.

Cass: Gone Baby Gone is much smaller than The Town, but no less impressive. It's one of the smartest thrillers mainstream America put out in recent years.
I experienced an invasion of my mind by a transcendentally rational mind, as if I had been insane all my life and suddenly I had become sane.

      • I think I'm taking the wife unit to see 'The Town' this weekend, time permitting. She's been inundated with coworkers who have been raving about it.

        • I'm with Ben on this one - yeah, you pretty much know what's going to happen after Henry's hitting his stride, but the fall is just as engrossing, too. Scorcese really did a great job on this.

I do agree Eyes Wide Shut is likely the weakest of Kubrick's films - I wasn't particularly sucked into it, and it was sort of plodding at points.

Everyone's into different genres, and that's great; it's always been rare for me to find film genres most ladies I know are into that aren't romances, comedies, or fantasy/sci-fi stuff. Jen's into action flicks, but not so much gangster films or westerns, nor does she bother with war films (although she did enjoy Saving Private Ryan).

          You're into what you're into... that's cool.

            No... you're wrong.

If our time at DERP taught us anything, it's to be totally unyielding and relentless. We must belittle those who think differently!

            • Lisa: that's funny that the only genre that you don't care for is Westerns. For some reason, my wife absolutely LOVES Westerns, and she counts several of them amongst her favorite films. Because of her love for Westerns, I introduced her to the Samurai films of Akira Kurosawa...sure enough, she loves them too.

Regarding Scorsese: I'll agree that the RISE part of 'Goodfellas' is more engrossing, but you're being unfair in dismissing the rest of the film. I'll grant that it's somewhat predictable, but it's still presented in an incredibly dynamic fashion that never fails to entertain.

              • My sister thinks that Liotta in Goodfellas is the sexiest creation ever to walk the planet, followed by a 30 year old Robert Redford. Ladies, please chime in. I don't get the Liotta love in that department.

                    • Watched about 20 minutes of Magruber last night. Martin was completely right, this movie was painfully unfunny and slow. 20 minutes felt like 80 minutes.

I turned it off and watched another Sons of Anarchy episode instead.

I never saw McGruber. I think it's Vin you're talking about.

When a movie is sofa king awful, it alters your time sense... then yes, it's time to watch something else.

No, no, no, no, no, no. If you find the second half of Goodfellas to be boring then you must not enjoy any kind of "Rise and fall" movie out there. Half of the fun of seeing these guys build themselves up is watching it being torn down.

Goodfellas is a perfect movie. Now I can understand not liking Casino, that movie can be a drag, mainly due to its length and the fact I can't stand Sharon Stone in that movie.

                            -edit-

I didn't realize it was Vin who had seen Magruber. Yes, the movie was that bad. I never should have gone back on the rule that states any movie based on an SNL character that isn't Blues Brothers or Wayne's World will suck the sweat of the balls of a dead man.

Besides, everything they did was already done in Hot Shots: Part Deux.

It's not hate, Rob, but I am concerned. I feel you should speak with a professional about this. Someone who cares.

                              • Alright, I'll pullback on the Goodfellas angst just because I am definately without sin on this.

Still, think the reasoning is BS. But that's....okay.
