  • QOS, on its own, isn't very good. If you CR first and then immediately segue into QOS and simply roll with the editing decisions, it's actually ok.

That's the overall consensus, but it really doesn't do much for me. My wife felt the same way when the movie ended as well.

Oh well. We see SPECTRE tomorrow, and we're both making a point of keeping our expectations in check. Some of the reviews for it are positively toxic.

The only good I find in QoS is Olga Kurylienko. She's a total babe.

Casino and Skyfall are the Bond highlights of the last 20 years, if not more.

        • Quantum is boring as shit and doesn't really contribute much to the overall legacy.

Spectre is interesting and action packed, but ultimately means nothing.

Skyfall is Bond doing The Dark Knight, but it works.

Couldn't even finish. Niche within niche flick about the craziness of living in LA and not being defined by your sexuality. The latter subject matter is interesting, sure, but its bogged down with a cast literally full of Max Landises.

I'll defend the shit outta it. Its the weakest of the Craig saga (Seeing Spectre later this morning) but it has more going for it than many realize partially because Casino Royale was just that fucking great and hard to follow.

              • I think The thing with Skyfall not feeling big is because it starts pretty bold but ultimately is a Bond origin story so he's confronting his small beginnings. I love it. I don't know that it's better than Casino Royale but it's damn good.

I might have to try the CR/Quantum double feature to see if it improves my feelings about Quantum.

Yup. If it wasn't for the writers strike we would get the very rare "two above average Bond movies in a row."

                  • SPECTRE

It was ok. Not great, not terrible...pretty middle of the pack in terms of the overall films.

Mike Myers is deserved some serious royalties...good GOD does this film crib stuff from the Austin Powers films.

                    • BONE TOMAHAWK- I agree with Troy's review. Some of the character building at the beginning just doesn't quite click and makes the first act drag a big. But once the rescue begins it's really good and then the confrontation begins and it's great. "The Scene" is bonkers and you think that's all there will be but you'll be wrong. Oh so wrong. Also, Kurt Russell is so good in this that I want to figure out how to pirate Hateful Eight right now.

                        • Green Inferno - I found it an enjoyable romp from Roth, though it's painfully obvious how he views stuff like college/internet activism, liberals, etc. I swear, it's like the characters in this learned NOTHING from Rambo, y'know?

No real surprises here, as character's fates are telegraphed from the get go, in fiery letters 20 stories high. As wiser folks here have said, the first cannibal kill is gruesome and pulls no punches, but the successive kills, though brutal in parts, don't match the promise that first kill brought. I was expecting/hoping for far more carnage based on Roth's previous work, the trailers and word of mouth. It's not quite as rough, violence-wise, as Hostel was, but it does have its merits.

If you love cannibal flicks, or are a fan of the Bear Jew, it's worth a view.

                          • I'm always disappointed in the level of violence in his heavily hyped films. I actually thought Hostel should have been MORE violent based on all the bad press it got.

I just finished watching The French Connection, which I had never seen before. Great ork from Hackman. Scheider was underutilized. The score was great, supa groovy 70's jazz and funk, but movies from this era are a stark reminder of haw far the technology in film editing and scoring have come. It sounds choppy by comparison to more modern works, which makes you appreciate things that you've come to take for granted. Overall, however, I didn't think this was the masterwork I've been led to believe. There was almost no character development, and not a whole lot of action. A lot of footage of Hackman or Scheider chasing after people on foot or staking them out in their cars. But credit where it's due; that one chase scene, where he commandeers the Nova (or whatever it was) and goes chasing after the sniper fleeing in the subway train was easily one of the best chase scenes in Hollywood history.
I like the way the line runs up the back of the stocking.

                            • The French Connection is one of the greatest films ever made. I know a lot of people will point to The Exorcist as Friedkin's best but this one is tops for me.

                              • Agreed, though I do see Iggy's points re: Scheider and the comparisons between films/scores of that time compared to what we have now.

Still, it is a classic film, and one that seems pretty faithful to the police of that era (the scene where they took apart the car to find the drugs, as well as the foot chases, etc. pretty much nailed the life of a NY cop back then, before computers and videos became commonplace).

I concur that the chase scene was epic and easily one of, if not the best, chase scenes ever filmed.
