Derivative as the plot is, I actually thought Willow held up surprisingly well.
I watched Heaven's Gate (the restored 216 minute print) for the first time ever today. The store didn't have Sorcerer or Harold and Maude, so I got this one ticked on my 'Unforgivably Unseen' list. Jesus, man. There's definitely a decent 2 hour movie in there, but it does not justify this length cut at all.
I can see that UA and Cimino spent a shit load, so wanted to get all that money up on screen, but there just isn't 4 hour's worth of story or compelling characters to justify the expanse. At least when Cleopatra went over budget and got cut down, it was from an intended 2-part, 6-hour passion project. Here, there's just hours of people walking into a building or into a scene for several long shots before anything happens. Don't get me wrong, it looks beautiful and the 2 or 3 large setpieces are pretty impressive - in fact, I've few problems with the last hour, terrible putty makeup on old Kristofferson aside. But getting there was testing at times. So after all that and years of curiosity, it's neither a disaster, nor a masterpiece. Just a very good, very bloated Western that marks the end of a cinematic era. As such, I've no regrets in picking it up.
One thing that stuck out to me was how many (mostly more successful) things since have lifted aspects of the film. The score and setting have a resemblance to and pre-date the pairing of Ungar & Mason's The Ashokan Farewell with Ken Burns' The Civil War; Jeff Bridges' drunk has a sometimes striking similarity to Val Kilmer's superior Doc Holliday; Brad Dourif is laying the groundwork for his role in Deadwood; the central three-way relationship has a similarity to that of Appaloosa; and I would not be surprised at all if Deakins had taken a good look at this before shooting Jesse James.I experienced an invasion of my mind by a transcendentally rational mind, as if I had been insane all my life and suddenly I had become sane.

Pacific Rim. I didn't particularly like HUnnam in this, but I didn't hate him, either. The spectacle of giant monsters fighting giant robots was what we all came to see, and Hunnam wasn't so bad that he took away from that at all. I guess it would've been hard for almost anyone to have taken much away from this spectacle. Elba was pretty good ("First, don't touch me. Second, don't touch me."). The monster and robot effects were pretty badass. This must have really been something on a big screen in 3D. This was sort of a scouting expedition, as I wanted to see if this would be OK for my 7 year old to watch. It looks OK to me. He's HUGE into kaiju at the moment, and I can't wait to see his reaction.I like the way the line runs up the back of the stocking.
2012 Avatar Theme: Jan-Red Borg. Feb-Red Borg, Mar-Red Borg, Apr-Red Borg, May-Red Borg. Jun-Red Borg. Jul-Red Borg. Aug-Red Borg. Sep-Red Borg. Oct-Red Borg. Nov-Red Borg. Dec-Red Borg.

HERE COMES THE DEVIL- uh, this starts with a completely unnecessary scissoring scene. I thought I had hit the button on BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR instead. Anyway, this movie freaked me right the hell out. I can watch horror stuff like Jason, Freddy, etc all day long and not be fazed but I can't deal with possession and satanic stuff. And the ending? Man. I really liked it.
