Brain Dead Radio Episode 90: Ain't No Skin Off My Butthole

Ceej and Rob kick off the show with a discussion regarding secret government programs, transcendental meditation, Art Bell, but Ceej just wants to learn how to throw fireballs. Rob spoils TF4 (SPOILERS: 14:50 – who cares), Ceej pumps some iron and deals with the Pain and Gain, and Rob wants Ceej to be a prospect in their eventual motorcycle gang called The Brain Dead. Ceej makes Rob talk about an “incident” he had a few weeks ago and then the duo answer questions from the BDR fans.

Michael Bay didn't do shit for Top Gun.

He was a minor Art Dept asst on Raiders and Return of the Jedi.
Plus, he directed a video for Vanilla Ice.

But yeah, not even he could elevate what was just the most tone deaf attempts at comedy. Michael is terrible at humor and always has been. He traffics in insultingly stupid stereotypes and tries for gallows humor when he hasn't the restraint to leave out the gore. What's worse is that he can't make any of it compelling with all the filters and camerwork in his toolbox. In fact, those tools work against him in every way with Pain and Gain.

It IS an exercise in ugliness that is utterly pointless. Just like most of Mike's work.

And fuck Marky Mark too. He's been doing Diggler-lite for years because he has the range of an AT&T phone and has been getting by for some reason.

Not to be a complete poop-party emcee, Ceej's impression of him is great.

Mark Wahlberg is a South Boston thug who learned how to network, that's all. Michael Bay is something else.

That guy has created the closest thing to Nihilist cinema that we'll see in America. He is the product of crass commercialism by way of Western apathy given life in the back of an overpriced sports car.

He also knows how to frame a shot and brings back the director/cinematographer relationship that seemed to die in the 1950s.

Mark my words, we're about 15-20 years away from a serious reappraisal of the man's work.

I love THE ROCK so much. I think it would be interesting if Bay restrained himself to that level again, just to see how it would look.
