  • The Cop/Detective Show Appreciation Thread

I was talking about this in the 'Movie you just watched thread' and I might as well get the ball rolling on this before I get socked in with work.

As you know, I've got a thing for cop/detective shows, perhaps it's because of my once delusional dreams of law enforcement or because I loved the idea of being so wrapped in a job that you're constantly being challenged. Either way, I just love the shit out a well done show regardless of subject matter.

My personal favorite has to be Homicide: Life on the Street, while it's not The Wire in terms of scope. It was Homicide that made me want to be a detecitve so bad. The idea of working cases, getting names on the board in red and black ink. Plus, it's Baltimore setting was extremly refreshing in that I wasn't seeing a show set in LA or NY.

For those of you who haven't seen the show, I'd recommend the first four seasons(Season 2 is only four episodes). While no one season is terrible, the cracks begin to appear in seasons five and six (especially when Andre Braugher leaves) and become full fledged in seven. (You can't for the life of me expect me to believe Calllie Thorne or Michael Michelle to be a cop).

But for you folks who love Hill Street Blues, Law & Order, Dragnet, Magnum PI, The Rockford Files, The Shield, Columbo, etc. Come on over.

SVU is really the only one that I can watch pretty much all the time. Still need to finish The Wire but thanks to you guys we ended up watching and loving The Shield. I never would have given that a chance if it wasn't for B and Billy.

I tried watching the more recent episodes of SVU and I can't stand it because everyone is an idiot in that show.

The Shield is soooooooooooooooooo good. I just watched it all the way through less than a year ago, but could do it again. I stopped in S3 for my current watching of The Wire, and need to finish it up again.

It really is amazing just how good Walton Goggins is as Shane Vendrell.

It also cracks me up just how ripped that guy is.

I still say that 'The Rockford Files' and 'Barney Miller' are the best P.I./Cop shows that I've ever seen. Indeed, the wife and I have been watching all of the RF on Netflix lately. Get past the somewhat shaky first season and it's virtually pure gold.

Also gotta love 'Moonlighting'. That was a fun show for the first few seasons.

Yeah SVU has some solid moments but it CAN shit the bed sometimes too.

The Shield had that rough first season then from that point on it's fucking spectacular.

Agreed, but Moonlighting fell to the wayside once David and Maddie got together.

I've been watching Dragnet off and on since it showed up on Ninstant. Jack Webb is the coolest cat in the LAPD.

In regards to the 80s shows, Fej knows what's up.

Miami Vice holds such a place of nostalgia in my mind because it was the first show like that I'd ever seen. It seemed so grown up to my transformer/G.I.Joe/gobots filled mind at the time that I can do nothing but gush over it still to this day.

Got inspired by this thread - Ed, this is for you, son!

Anyway, used to be fully into the cop shows back in the day - Dragnet being my all-time favorite (c'mon, the pot-smoking hippie family? The guy who painted half his face blue? Sherman Potter as Bill Gannon?). Used to be a slave to all things CHiPs, Mannix, Starsky and Hutch, Equalizer, Ironside, Cannon, Barnaby Jones, FBI, Adam-12 (with EMERGENCY! as a mega-one-two punch), and oh, so many others.

It had better be more tactically accurate than that trailer he was in...

Pursuing a suspect without a weapon drawn! I'm glad the killer got him for that cock-up!
