The squeeze was an afterthought. Literally, it came down to having one of the biggest TV finales of the last 40 years on their hands and being scared of shitting the bed.

So, now they're literally doing everything they can to make it perfect. Plus, ABC wants the record for Highest TV broadcast audience.

Damon Lindelof, is dropping hints about the series finale. Specifically, Lindelof said that viewers will not be getting a fade-to-black finale, a la “The Sopranos.”
“ ‘The Sopranos’ ending only worked on ‘The Sopranos,’ ” Lindelof said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “The series finale has to fit the show. We’re trying to end ‘Lost’ in a way that feels ‘Lost’-ian and fair and will generate a tremendous amount of theorizing.”
Translation: Like much of “Lost,” the finale won’t make total sense.
