I hear wildly different things about this show. That it's either utter shit or it's really good. But I have never gotten around to watching it.

Torchwood tries harder and they go after bigger concepts. Yet, the Brits don't really know how to shoot Television Action-Drama. They're working at it and getting better. It's just not there yet.

Torchwood? I would think is like a more special effects laden X-Files. To an extent.

Yes. But then there are connections to Dr. Who because it's set in that universe. Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who.
