The day OJ ran

On tonight's ESPN 30 for 30 series, there's going to be a documentary about all of the major sports events going on that day. It does facinate the hell out of me that you had all of these events going on that day. And of course, the OJ chase.

I remember it for being the last day of fourth grade, plus my Mom had wanted to check out the murder scene which was near my elementary school.

It was a very strange time for LA as we just had been hit by an Earthquake that January, a riot two years ago, massive brush fires in October of '93 and some floods thrown in for good measure.

Shit, that was today, huh? Seems like yesterday - I remember my family and I glued to our TV sets watching the chase. Folks were holding up signs of support on the route, off bridges, etc. My brother and I were betting each other as to if/when OJ was going to get shot by one of the cops or blow his brains out in the car, why nobody threw out one of those strips to shred the Bronco's tires, why at the speed they were going, no police got in front of OJ's Bronco.

This was the event that pretty much solidified OJ being guilty in my eyes. Innocent men don't run.

Still, I can remember watching the chase with the NBA finals in the corner. We were wondering why everyone was going crazy out on the freeway.

Wow, time flies! I also remember that like it was yesterday.

Ironically enough, I had rented "Taxi Driver" of all movies, and had that in the VCR. I had laid down on the sofa, and fell asleep during the last half hour or so. If you remember VCRs, when the tape runs out, it automatically rewinds, and when the rewind is complete, it pops you back to whatever channel was on your TV. The movie ended while I was napping, it rewound, and I heard that lound "THUNK!" when it was done, which woke me up. So I woke up and was rubbing my eyes just as the VCR clicked back to the TV channel, and the first thing I see is the white Bronco traveling at the slow speed with all the police cars trailing after it. Honestly, for a second I thought I was dreaming - I couldn't believe I was seeing this. I sat there just fascinated, and watched it all the way through till they followed him in to his driveway, and he got out of the car.

And Tim, I thought the same thing too - I thought, "Holy shit, he really did do it. Why else would he run if he was innocent?"

We all knew about the murder, much in the same way we had heard about Cobain offing himself. We were a bunch of media-savy types while we laughed about Animanics.

I don't remember. I just know that I was stuck in a long ass line when I heard people talking about it. There was a large group of people in front of the TV display. Casual racism is more staggering to hear when you're younger, but I heard some things.
