Definite cognition doesn't determine death. The end of basic life-supporting functions determines death. When the lungs don't inflate, the brain doesn't fire off electrical sparks and the heart doesn't pump....you're dead.

Using Schrodinger's Cat, you can say that people who die but are resuscitated back to life...they count as two people. It was an interesting theory back in the 1930s, but it doesn't hold weight today.
