Fresh from the internets!
When comparing one thing with another you may find that one is more appealing “than” another. “Than” is the word you want when doing comparisons. But if you are talking about time, choose “then“: “First you separate the eggs; then you beat the whites.” Alexis is smarter than I, not “then I."Blog Time! http://plasticlovin.blogspot.com/

"Would you a like cookie?"
"Yes, I would, of course!"
But that's a tangent. On to Then Vs. Than!
Than is a comparative.
I rather do this than that.
I am taller than Joe. Joe is shorter than I.
Rather than eat less, I prefer to exercise more.
Each example has at least two things to compare - one activity over another, height of one person over another, options of one method of weight loss over another. Than compares two (or more!) choices.
I like reading better than watching tv or playing video games.

Then is for time or order.
Eat, then play.
If you want to go outside, then you must finish your chores.
I went to the bank, then had fun shopping!
He said he was tired and then he fell asleep.
"If you want to get into a good school, then study!"
I make the decisions! When you grow up, you'll be in control of your life then. (Awkward sentence, but shows it at the end of a clause instead of the beginning - stressing THEN.)
Then assigns chronological time or order to events.
First you eat, then you play.
First you do chores, then you go outside.
First you get money, then you spend it.
First you are sleepy, then you sleep.
First you study, and as a result then you get accepted.
First you grow up, then you make your own decisions.
"If, then" clauses: meaning, in order to do the if, you must first do the then.

But if you're not into the Superbowl, then you can stay for the commercials.
If you're not into the Superbowl, than you can stay DOES NOT WORK!
"Then" is correct!Blog Time! http://plasticlovin.blogspot.com/

but really this could go both ways. hahaha. both ways.
than:
<TABLE class=luna-Ent><TBODY><TR><TD class=dnindex>2.</TD><TD>(used after some adverbs and adjectives expressing choice or diversity, such as other, otherwise, else, anywhere, or different, to introduce an alternative or denote a difference in kind, place, style, identity, etc.): I had no choice other than that. You won't find such freedom anywhere else than in this country. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
<TABLE class=luna-Ent><TBODY><TR><TD class=dnindex>7.</TD><TD>in that case; as a consequence; in those circumstances: If you're sick, then you should stay in bed. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
