Superman the Movie is plenty flawed, but it's way ahead of its time in terms of blueprinting how to do a large-scale superhero origin on film. And Reeve really is one of the all-time great discoveries as Clark and Kal.

This. Yeah, it's dated, and it needs work, but it still holds up as a good superhero flick. Reeve owned that part in this flick, locking it down further in Superman 2, pretty much linking him to the character much as Lugosi was linked to Dracula or Carrie Fisher to Princess Leia.

Still, I enjoyed Man of Steel quite fine, and am glad it broke the hold the Donner films had on me. Would that it had the lightness of tone/theme that the earlier flicks had (again, Superman is NOT Batman), but it definitely got Superman actually DOING super stuff again.

Here's hoping the upcoming Superman/Batman flick kicks everything up a notch.
