New movies undeserving of their own thread 2: The Night It Came Home

I love Del Toro in theory. But in practice most of his shit leaves me cold. I can't remember the last movie of his that I actually liked? Maybe Blade 2? Maybe this will be awesome?

I'm a longtime defender of the Lynch film. It's absolutely a failure but it's the best kind of failure: a director really, really going for it with about half of the ideas working beautifully and the other half falling flat.

More than anything, I appreciate the overall production design of the film...it really feels grand and other-worldly with a huge sense of scale.

Between the theatrical cut (which is too short and not fleshed out enough) and the Alan Smithee cut (which is a death march) is a really great cut of the film. I'm sure there's a fan cut of this somewhere and I'd like to see it someday.

all the themes of Dunes were fucked. Dune isn’t a messiah/savior movie, it’s the EXACT OPPOSITE. At least Villeneuve knows that. It’s a deconstruction of the savior myth. It’s, despite it’s age, a feminist story. Women are extremely important in the story. Ecology is also not remotely touched.

The Harkonnens aren’t fat fucking disgusting pigs. Sadistic, yes. But the Baron is the smartest on the board. He’s a scheming fuck. Rabban is a brute, but smart. Lynch made it a dumbfuck. Sting is useless, and a crappy actor.

and don’t get me started on the stupid voice guns, all because Lynch didn’t want super kung fu in the desert.

This was...kinda great! I was wary about the film because I was so thoroughly sick of the damned trailers, but it was actually a very solid film. My wife, who understands very little about video games in general, also enjoyed it.
