Back on point, yes, I enjoyed the hell out of Pacific Rim, and yes, it does have issues. No way, though, is it even on the same level as Star Wars as a generational touchstone or film-going experience. Shit, Serenity had a more vocal fanbase and that's a franchise that's 1 film and 1 season of a TV series.

Pacific Rim was a perfect example of what the first critic said - it's basically so special effects heavy that, yeah, it could have been a cartoon. And I find no fault with that at all. This was never going to be a flick that was going to make you examine the human condition, analyze true love, envelop you in a labyrinthine mystery, or make you re-evaluate your life. Giant robots. Punching giant monsters. Wrecking a city. This puppy was made as fun escapism, nothing more. Sit back, watch it like it was a pre-film cartoon, then move on to a deeper movie.

I do hope, however, we get similar levels of carnage and mayhem in the Godzilla flick next year. Again, another film where I can honestly say I'm going to give less than a shit about the humans and save my love for the Big G and whatever monsters he's fighting.

I fucking loved Pacific Rim. There's an earnestness and heart to it that most other summer blockbusters haven't had for awhile. Also giant robots beating monsters to death. Especially that part.

And anyone who says that Bayformers had better characters is fucking high on the Supercool and is also probably a filthy astronaut.

It's an incredible action movie with shitty characters. Didn't stop The Raid from being amazing. I think we just all expected GdT to know how to write better characters.
