"The bear is a solitary animal. They like their space. They live in a magic circle. They don't mind if you're, like, a mile away. But if you get inside their circle, they will maul you." - Anonymous

                  "WHAT ABOUT BOB" (1976)

                  Directed by: Sam Peckinpah
Written: Sam Peckinpah, Walon Green and Eddie Bunker

                  Cast:

                  Warren Oates as Bob Wiley
Richard Dreyfuss as Dr. Leo Marvin
                  Ali McGraw as Fay Marvin
Tatum O' Neal as Siggy Marvin
                  Jodie Foster as Anna Marvin
                  Margot Kidder as Lily Marvin
Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson and Pat Buttram as the Switchboard Operators
                  and

                  Walter Cronkite as himself

                  Synopsis:

After carefully adapting a rejected Alvin Sargent screenplay, Peckinpah set out to recover from the disappointment of "The Killer Elite". Turning what was once a comedy into a startling look at the world of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Peckinpah set out to bring the horrors of a Post-Vietnam World to your local cinema.

Shooting in a non-descript Maine town, Peckinpah and his small crew didn't tell anyone that they were filming. Keeping the primary action in Bob's apartment, Manhattan Medical Call Center and the Marvin's Summer Home; Peckinpah was allowed an intimacy that he never had in his other movies.

After MGM cut his version down to two hours, most felt that something would be lost from another Peckinpah gem. The end-result was a tense drama that led to 7 surprise Oscar nominations. While some later critics would later decry Anna's rape scene, most would say that the 18 minute long scene of forceful love-making was the reason for Foster's first Oscar win.

                  FUN FACT:
Butch Patrick was initially hired to play Siggy Marvin, but was fired for insolence. Tatum O' Neal was forced upon the director by MGM. A sudden script change is the result in gender change and the awkward "man touch" scene with Oates.
