I finally got around to seeing this tonight. Great stuff. Watching it in the cinema reminded me of when I caught American Gangster - it wasn't showing me anything radically fresh, but the strength of the performances and direction elevated the material to a level far beyond what must have been on the page. It's amazing what solid actors, slick camerawork, and a bit of Led Zep can do.

Bale was his dependably great self and I don't begrudge him his Little Gold Dude. For me, though, this was all about Wahlberg. In a lot of ways, he's really the supporting character in his own story here. He gets a lot of his thunder usurped by the flashier, wiry Dicky. Wahlberg's too commanding to be eclipsed, however. Micky Ward is the perfect foil for his usual screen persona. It lets him show the simmering intensity we all know he can knock out in his sleep, but it also allows him tender, angst-ridden moments with Charlene (a fantastic Amy Adams.) I've not seen everything the guy's done, but watching Stayff Sah-geant Dig-nam excel in those moments felt like a revelation. Growth. This wasn't just a rehash of Dirk Diggler's youthful vulnerability. This was a man struggling with the shackles of a testing family, massive expectation, and dwindling patience.

    Better than The Wrestler.

Out of all the Oscar nominees for Best Picture (that I saw, at least), this one was my favorite of the year. I'm not sure if Wahlberg has ever been better. But one thing's for sure: Amy Adams has never been more smokin'. HOT, HOT, HOT. When her mouth gets filthy and vulgar, I just want her more. Something about a feisty bitch that just turns me on.

Wahlberg was great, and frankly it's bullshit to hear some say he's the weak-link. As great as Bale, Leo, Adams and the others were, it's on his shoulders. If you're not behind Mickey and rooting for him to overcome all his adversities, then the movie just plain doesn't work.

Yeah, we thought it was great from start to finish. Top notch work from everyone involved. This is also the film that made me a fan of Amy Adams...I've never been impressed with her before but she really delivered the goods here.

And yeah, Wahlberg was aces in this.

It's great to hear everyone enjoyed Wahlberg as much as I did. He's impressed me before, but none more so than here.

Furthering the Amy Adams love, the little pre-coitus interruptus moment where she leads Micky to bed in the see-through bra is one of the hottest things I've seen in a long time. No laboured fumbling about; just a gutter-mouthed temptress with a tremendous body who knows how to dial it up. Di-no-mite.

I agree with everything. Saw it on Saturday and loved every second of it. The fights were the most realistic boxing bouts I've ever seen committed to film (or video, in this case).

Yep, really great work from all involved. But from the first seconds of the film, you know it belongs to Bale and he's gonna be amazing. And amazing he was.

Still haven't seen a bad David o'Russell film.

That's exactly what the wife and I thought. He showed up onscreen and we were both like...OK, I get why he's got all of the Oscar buzz now. Within 5 minutes, we knew he was going to win the damned thing.

As cliche (read: retard) as it sounds, it really did take me a minute to recognize Bale. It's also a great thing to show little kids to scare them away from drugs. "See, kids? That's what happened to Batman after he took drugs!"

I can't be the only one to think "What's Will Arnett doing in this movie".
