Well before it was out of spite. He agreed to make Superman Returns for Warner Brothers. After he inked a First-Look deal with Fox, that didn't include X-Men 3 and the studio was fucking around in negotiations. Fox got livid and the next day kicked him off the lot... Cut to the following day, he walked right back in... to direct the House, M.D. pilot.
