  • The only thing I will say against the new suit...and you know what I'm about to say...

...the crotch rot. The fuck were they thinking when they approved that?

    • Saw those pics on another board I frequent, and I am disappoint. How hard would it have been for the designers to make the lines webs? It's SPIDER-MAN, not Grid Guy! And what's with Garfield's hair? It's like Eraserhead redux!

Y'know what else bugs me about the suit? It looks oily and dirty, like it hasn't seen a washing machine in weeks.

      • Imagine the feeling the inker would have if they forced them to render that busy bunch of crap on the page.

Pretty sure they were thinking "we have a deadline, let's throw some shit together and hoof it." Either way, the result is not my favorite.

            • I'm not bothered by the suit at all. Actually really like the fact that it's substantially different from what we've seen before. And brighter. Brighter is good.

YES. Even though it would have been probably 20 years or so too late for Robert Goulet to immortalize Kraven as he should have. That would've been more James Cameron's Spider-Man with Michael "it doesn't mean we're engaged or anything" Biehn" in the title double-role. The one in my head, anyway.

I loved Maguire. He nailed the balance of goofiness and sweetness. That said, I do think Grace would have made an *ahem* spectacular choice. Still like to think of what it would've been like with him in the role(s) every now and then.

              • Grace would've done a terrific job as Spidey. He looks like the character, can pull out the wisecracking smart-ass card Spidey requires, and still be the all-around good guy Peter Parker is.

Goulet as Kraven? The cut of your jib, Bobby. I like it.

                • I thought Tobey was fine as Pete, but when it came to Spider-Man, he was all wrong.

Zero confidence with a stilted or downright timid line delivery when Spidey is a smart-ass, quipping machine to Peter's more subdued nerd self.

Such is the stuff that Grace could do in his sleep.

                  What might have been...

Cheers, Tim! I know there were plenty of people who wanted to see Bruce Campbell do it (and I've no problem with The Chin), but the first time I thought about who I'd really want, Goulet just popped in there and I've associated him with the role ever since. Felt right.

I agree with you about Tobey as Pete and Tim certainly summed it up perfectly, but I still enjoy Tobey's Spidey persona. Bizarrely enough, I like it because of the very reason some don't: he didn't play it 100% as a different person. I liked that you could still see the scared kid inside the suit hiding behind the well-delivered put-down. OK, maybe he wasn't as funny as Grace probably would've been at those moments, but when Tobey worked he put gangbusters to shame ("hey kiddo, let Mom and Dad talk for a minute, will ya?" / "I guess you haven't heard. I'm the sheriff around these parts.")

Whether or not this was the best way to play the double role is debatable, of course, but I liked that this decision made the character stand out amongst a slew of actors who played their dual roles straight down the middle as totally different people.

I really admire your enthusiasm and that you took away something I just can not see, hear, nor feel when it comes to his Spider-Man performance.

Those were the worst line deliveries, just cringe-inducing.

With that negative assessment out of the way, his doofy Peter faces were the greatest.

                          • I always thought Elijah Wood would have made a great Webhead/Pete Parker. Mind you, this was post-Faculty, pre-Fellowship of the Ring.

                            • I'd have endorsed that nod if he had ended up in the suit.
