  • Who are you? (Who, who, who, who?)

I feel like Guided By Voices are a very good approximation of my essence in musical form. Take a track like "I Am A Tree," with its barbed guitars and playful yet serious message, or "Hold On Hope," all stop-start lyrics and lo-fi strumming: it's pure Bear from start to finish.

They even have a song called "Tropical Robots."

Does anyone else feel like they have, in Matrix terms, their own "musical self image?"

^ Knows that this all an elaborate setup to nail me with a Fred Durst joke.

Gotta go with Rush. That band's music pretty much has been my life's soundtrack for the most part. Subdivisions pretty much nails my high school years ("be cool or be cast out"), with The Analog Kid covering my hopes/dreams at the time. Far Cry also is indicative of where and who I am now as opposed to where I thought I would be at this point in my life.

Ahhhh, but other artists I like also help to define me - Motorhead, Caterwaul, Replacements, Lush, Joy Division, Swans, REM, ALL, etc.

Well, I share a name with Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, so there's that. Otherwise, not really. I'm fickle about most music, and go hot and cold on groups regularly. I'll say I'm a strange mix of Bun B and SRV.

70s Matt: Aerosmith and Deep Purple, thanks to my brothers.
80s Matt: Rush and Yes, for the most part.
90s Matt: Rush and Dream Theater.
00s Matt: Rush, Dream Theater, and Opeth.
                    10s Matt: Rush.

                    Spot the trend?

My less clever and more honest answer.

Pink Floyd (specifically Gilmour's contributions), A hodge podge of 90's (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins and Alice in Chains).

Much like William, my musical tastes are so all over, I don't know that I could honestly answer this question.
