  • 80's Music: The Confessional

OK, I'm an 80's music fan. Looking at my iPod this morning, I realized that the 80's are probably my favorite period of music.

    Dammit.

    The Cult
    David Bowie's 80s material
    Dokken (yes, Dokken)
    Duran Duran
    The Fixx
    INXS
    Iron Maiden
    Missing Persons
    Queen
    Queensryche
    Rainbow
    Rush
    Saga
    Supertramp
    Triumph
    Van Halen
    Zebra

    Shit...

I see absolutely nothing wrong with those artists. You have impeccable taste my good sir.

I love you, Howard. Even if you DO like Night Ranger.

There shall be no evil talk of the Night Ranger. Excepting one song. Sister Christian. Talk about overplay. Can't stand it now.

Nothing wrong with SOME 80's music. Some really good stuff was churned out during that time. Hell who doesn't think of this song every day.

I like the overall focus on melody that was prevalent in the 80's. So much of the new stuff focuses on pure aggression at the expense of having a consistent melody, and it's pretty jarring.

What are you favorite bands, and which bands do you consider to be irredeemable? My secret shame entails a weakness for Journey's 'Escape' album...mock away.

It's hard for me to come up with favorites and irredeemable because I was so young at the time. However I can point out what I love and hate by hearing it.

              And 'Escape?'
              1. "Don't Stop Believin'" – 4:10
              2. "Stone in Love" – 4:25
              3. "Who's Crying Now" – 5:01 (Cain, Perry)
              4. "Keep on Runnin'" – 3:39
              5. "Still They Ride" – 3:49
              6. "Escape" – 5:16
              7. "Lay It Down" – 4:13
              8. "Dead or Alive" – 3:20
              9. "Mother, Father" – 5:28 (M. Schon, N. Schon, Perry, Cain)
              10. "Open Arms" – 3:18 (Cain, Perry)
              11. "La Raza del Sol" - 3:26 (Cain, Perry)
              12. "Don't Stop Believing" (live) – 4:19
              13. "Who's Crying Now" (live) – 5:43 (Cain, Perry)
              14. "Open Arms" (live) – 3:22 (Cain, Perry)

How can you not love it?

I must also say that the whole 'hairmetal' genre produced alot of good music. They had the wheat and the chaffe, just like any other musical genre. To dismiss those bands outright does them a disservice.

I notice a lack of Depeche Mode here. Or New Order OR Pet Shop Boys.

All of which had some really good stuff during that time but like I said, I wouldn't know the songs unless I heard them. Terrible with that time frame musically.
