    Babylon Zoo: 'Spaceman'. Actually, I'm not listening to it...it's on permanent repeat inside of my brain and absolutely refuses to stop.

    How in the hell did this song become such a huge hit in Europe???!!! Bobby? Ben?

      Basically, there was a period in the mid-90s when, if your song was on a Levi's advert, it got to number one. The ad in question was this. And you've gotta admit, that portion of it is cool.

      Once everyone heard the full track, they felt royally ripped off, but by then it was too late - the single had the words "From the Levi's Jeans advert" on it, so shitmunchers bought it. Jas Mann turned out to be a right dick as well, and Babylon Zoo became a footnote in what was otherwise a fairly respectable decade for British music.

      Levi's were also responsible for the late-90s career resurgence of Shaggy, someone that was bad enough the first time (Oh Carolina), unforgiveable the second time around (Boombastic) and absolutely mind-boggling the third time (It Wasn't Me).
      I experienced an invasion of my mind by a transcendentally rational mind, as if I had been insane all my life and suddenly I had become sane.

        I remember being over in the Netherlands on vacation when that song was big. BIG big. Like fucking HUGE. I remember turning on MTV Europe and they were playing it constantly...no shit, they were airing it once every 45 minutes or so, and the VJs were contantly going 'we've got Babylon Zoo coming up in a half hour!' It's catchy and sticks in your brain, but it's not a particularly good song...I've never heard that Levi's advert (and it's blocked here at wor), so I can't comment on the differences.

          This sounds like it was the European version of Vanilla Ice and 'Ice Ice Baby'...stratospheric rise followed very quickly by a massive crash.

          eta: I can't wait to watch that advert and also see if that fucking video is on youtube.

                        Rerb, that song is the absolute front runner for Song of the Year 2010. I kept wondering how that song would play out on Soul Train back in the day (lead singer doing his thing, rest of the band dancing in time behind him). Thanks for that - made my week!

                        I'm on an '80s kick lately, and I found and played an old tape(!) my "cousin" made with her garage band (Illusion) where they covered this song:
