Got the deluxe editions of What's Going On and Let's Get It On over the weekend, so I'm balls deep in two of the greatest albums ever recorded. I love that Marv followed up one of the most influential, political albums in black music with an entire album about fucking (specifically, fucking a 17 year old - Janis Hunter, Nona Gaye's mum). That he got away with releasing a song called You Sure Love To Ball in 1974 as a single is testament to how good these albums are.
There is some instrumental stuff on What's Going On with the Funk Brothers that never got made into finished songs. I'm gonna use it all to score a 70s buddy cop movie one day, cos its funkier than a skunk that died several weeks ago and has been left in a damp cheese shop. I know that when Anna Gordy heard When Did You Stop Lovin' Me, When Did I Stop Lovin' You she threatened an Invasion of Privacy lawsuit (which she recanted when she was told how ridiculous that was).
