I mean, he ain't wrong in my opinion. I'd take real dialogue and creative camera work over breathtaking computer generated backgrounds any day of the week. It's one of the main reasons the original trilogy triumphs over the prequels. It's why The French Connection is so much more exciting than any of the Fast and Furious movies, because "Holy Shit, how did they do that???" will always triumph over "Man, I bet that took forever to render".

Billy, you may live your life a quarter mile at a time, but Fast and The Furious just doesn't have that sense of danger and risk that French Connection has.

Don't get me wrong, I think CGI has it's place. I think for movies like Inception, where it's used tastefully, to augment reality seamlessly as possible, it's great. When I watched Avatar, however, I kept waiting for the long ass cut scene to be over so I could play.

I will never say anyone is wrong for liking any movie (that's the kind of bullshit DERP likes to foster). I can see why Avatar would appeal to people, but I just found it to be too much technology wanking and not enough storytelling/acting/writing. I would watch Pulp Fiction over Avatar any day of the week.

To further along with a Cameron example, I LOVE The Abyss. But the reason I love that movie is Ed Harris, the rest of the ensemble, and the claustrophobic underwater scenes, not the water penis.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't start the thread just to say fuck all CGI and I'll never watch it, I just respect the hell out of Tarantino saying that, especially in such a bad-ass fashion. It's like the story Peter Buck tells about Prince. Buck heard once that Prince only listened to his own music, and nothing else. Buck said he didn't know if that was true, but he hoped it was, because man, that would be awesome.

CGI is a tool to be used in order to enhance the story. I agree with the idea that it's used too much in some cases, but not all directors want to stay stuck in the 70's as much as Quentin does.
