Watched the remake of 'The Mechanic' again last night. Seriously, the wife and I really think that this is one of the better action flicks of the last couple of years. My wife, in particular, LOVES it.

That's about the only thing that I came out of that movie going "huh, that was pretty well done".

That car chase would have been right at home in a legitimate 'action' movie. It was well staged and VERY well edited. Whoever is ultimately responsible for its inclusion (Shawn Levy, the director?) should do an action film if they haven't done one already.

As my back started flaring up from moving all the fucking crap off my bookcases, I decided to get lit and watch Crank.

I'm glad I did. Just so much energy and effort in the camera and stunt work, it's incredible that this film got made to begin with.

And it was Neveldine/Taylor's first film too. Just fucking astounding when you step back and observe its place in the current filmic landscape.

To crib from Master Troll Program, Armond White, Neveldine/Taylor "stand so lonely on the culture’s edge that their au courant ingenuity seems absolutely avant-garde when compared to standard box-office formula."

Nah, but it's been long enough that it feels Summer's Eve Fresh.

I saw Four Lions for the first time the other day. I don't really get the lukewarm response a lot of critics gave it (or at least, that's how it seemed). I think it would make a great double bill with Dr Strangelove.

Its black as black comedy can be, its not quite as obvious as some of Chris Morris' previous stuff and crucially its goddamn hilarious, biting and moving. Riz Ahmed gives a pretty remarkable performance throughout and the entire cast is on point (everything that came out of Kayvan Novak/Waj's mouth had me in stitches and a lot of that is because he reminds me of guys I know live in Manchester). As highly recommended as can be, this was probably THE comedy of 2010.
