I'M sure this is a typo but it made me chuckle.

Anyone seen Valhalla Rising? I'm about halfway through and was getting a cool gory Herzog vibe to begin with but I'm not so sure it's worth ploughing through any more. Mikkelsen's good, though.
I experienced an invasion of my mind by a transcendentally rational mind, as if I had been insane all my life and suddenly I had become sane.

You know what else Mikkelson's good in?

            EVERYTHING!

Serious man-crush/ bro-ner for that guy... and I've been waiting for that film ever since I first saw the trailer.

Watched "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" on Instant. Apparently, Swedish cinema did NOT die along with Bergman... Very tight film, good performances, and a creepy as fuck soundtrack... gives you a Zimmer's 'Hannibal' vibe.

            APPROVED!

            • OK, I watched 'The Adventures of Ford Fairlane' last night.

              Observations:
              - Everyone involved knew EXACTLY what kind of movie they were making. As such, the film totally WORKS as:
              1. a foul-mouthed R-rated comedy
              2. a self-referential excuse to have fun
              3. a vehicle for Renny Harlin to show that he has the goods
              4. an excuse to give Wayne Newton a film role
              - This film is beautifully shot. Seriously, it's a much better looking film than it should have been. Supposedly, the producers were so impressed with the dailies from this film that they gave Renny Harlin 'Die Hard 2' before it even got released.
              - Dice had legitimate screen presence. Given a chance to develop, he could have had a decent career as a film actor. It's too bad that he allowed himself to get STUCK with this 'Dice' persona for too long.

I remember taking a date to see this film on opening weekend. It was a full theater and everyone 'got' the film, laughing at the appropriate spots. My date loved it too, and she was FAR from the only gal in the theater (which was surprising).

Fun little film. Is it 'Citizen Kane'? NO, but it isn't trying to be...it is what it is, and you either go with it or you don't.

              • I always thought Dice had a good shot at being an actor, especially during the film Casual Sex with Lea Thompson and Victoria Jackson. He went from being cool, macho guy to a guy who's trying to figure out love like everyone else. Great work from him, but I agree his career kind of went south, especially after Ford Fairlaine.

He was also decent in the HBO film 'No Contest' (or 'Die Hard 12: This Time it's a Beauty Contest) in the bad guy role. As I recall, he was also decent in that sitcom 'Bless This House' in which he tried to escape his DICE persona.

It's really too bad. He really was on top of the world for about 4 years there...if I'm not mistaken, he's the first (and ONLY) comedian to sell out Madison Square Garden.

                      • Hardcore with George C. Scott

I've been a fan of Paul Schrader's work, except for Cat People which is BORING. This movie is very very good and captures 70s sleaze very well. Also, I had no idea that LA had so many sex stores and porn shops back in the day.

Finally, I've never seen 8mm, but I wonder if that was somekind of attempt at a remake?

                        • It was a spiritual sequel, but with more Frank Sobotka and waaay more crossbows.

I kinda wish Hardcore didn't end with that total copout. Though Jorge fucked shit up, it had too much of a Hollywood ending.

                            Spoiler: ENDING SPOILERERER
Him finding his daughter alive, at all, was bullshit. She'd either be dead or so strung out there was no coming back from it.

                          • It would have been a real downer had the daughter said she wasn't going. Granted you could tell she wasn't thinking straight, what with that shiner and all.

Also, I wonder if the scenes where Scott is looking for the porn actor in the film was played for comedy?

                              • Kind of makes you wonder if 'Taken' had been made 30 years ago, would George C. Scott have been as kick ass as Neeson was...
