    • It's on Hulu. It's so good.

      • Waiting on Sarah to finish her D&D game so hopefully we can watch that tonight.

        • Ana and I started The Old Guard.

After 20 minutes, I went to the other room and watched something else. Yet another Netflix joint that felt less like a theatrical film (despite the pricey talent) and more like a cheap made for TV production.

          • It’s so boring. I haven’t finished it yet but, man... I think I was expecting another FURY ROAD or ATOMIC BLONDE because Theron was involved.

            • You were right, PALM SPRINGS was a hoot. Wife and I had a really good time with that.

We also watched GREYHOUND on Apple TV. Excellent. Nice and intense military porn.

              • I enjoyed The Old Guard for what it was but it for sure is NOWHERE near Fury Road or Atomic Blonde. For a netflix production it's ok, but for me it was a one and done.

Universe is the superior show but for some reason 1 season. SG-1 borderline unwatchable? 423 seasons.

                    • SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER. I think this movie went into my top 10 of all time. It's just a masterpiece.

There is so much going on in that movie and it gets nowhere near the praise it deserves.

Hell, it's one of the movies where the PG edit made it into a different but better film.

I watched it for the first time about a year ago and was blown away. I really thought it was just a dancing picture. Holy shit was I wrong.

This film tackles an amazing amount of thematic material, and Tony's character arc is one of the most compelling arcs that I've ever seen. The changes that he undergoes as the film progresses are astounding yet all feel very real for him. It's all organic. That final conversation with Stephanie at the end is an all timer, and I'm sure it's the moment that earned Travolta all of his accolades.

Oh yeah, and the dancing and the soundtrack? Aces.

Badham wanted to shoot it like a documentary and it worked. Especially mixing the flat cinematography against the dialogue audio levels overlapping in an Altman style.

                            • Sharky's Machine is a perfectly enjoyable meat & potatoes cop actioner that's almost undone by Burt Reynolds' directorial choices. The bad guy is shot dead and within 10 seconds it smash cuts to him and Rachel Ward being all lovey dovey. End credits(!)

I do like that this is Reynolds doing Dirty Harry and wish he dropped the Shitkicker image and struck with this.

                              • STAYING ALIVE was definitely...a movie.

Actually, it’s more of a music video. It’s just one song after another (by either The Bee Gees or by Frank Stallone) and it gets rather tiresome.

The plot throughline actually is pretty solid, though. Tony becoming a professional dancer is the logical step for him, and seeing him struggle just like any other novice dancer feels authentic. There’s no reason to think that he’d be an immediate success and the film plays up that struggle pretty well in the first act. Him seeing a chance to steal the lead role is in character, and I buy him getting in there and nailing the role and earning it.

The finale is all overdone bullshit, though. Watching ‘Satan’s Alley’ is borderline laughable and is borderline camp. Him strutting at the end kinda redeems the prior 20 minutes, though...it’s a smart move and ends the film on a good character moment and a good riff on the far superior SNF.

Also, Travolta deserves credit for committing to the film 100%, physically. Reading up on it, he apparently trained for 5 months or so to get a dancer’s physique and it shows. He’s convincing as hell in here.

But hoo boy, the script. The whole thing with the romance with the lead dancer is balderdash. Where SNF treated relationships with authenticity, this film treats them as cliches and tropes. Nothing lands. It doesn’t help that the film is deliberately PG and lacks the edge of SNF in terms of being adult about matters.

It’s not a good movie but it’s strangely watchable.
