THE FINAL COUNTDOWN (1980) with Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen, Katherine Ross, Charles Durning, and James Farentino. No, the song by Europe is not in the film, although I remember it being used in the late 80s to promote the film in commercials on TV

Premise: it’s 1980 and the US supercarrier Nimitz, commanded by Kirk Douglas with a civilian efficiency expert on board (Martin Sheen) is out doing routine drills by Pearl Harbor. A mysterious storm appears that ends up being a time portal, and the Nimitz travels back in time to December 6th, 1941. From there, the main question (once they’ve come to terms with what’s happened) is whether or not to stop the attack on Pearl Harbor the next day.

My dad took me and some of my friends to see this theatrically. We enjoyed it then, and I mainly remember being blown away by the really cool aircraft carrier footage. This film was made with the full cooperation of the Navy on the Nimitz herself, and holy cow do you get some quality military porn here. In truth, this film outdoes TOP GUN in terms of showing off the airplanes and the procedures used to launch/retrieve them, and some of the flying footage is fantastic. There’s a scene where two Tomcats are ‘playing’ with two Japanese Zeroes that needs to be seen to be believed.

Of note, Maurice Binder (who did the James Bond credit sequences with the naked girls and such) did the special effects work for the time travel sequences.

It’s an OK movie and explores some interesting time travel paradox questions, but it’s fantastic military porn. It was fun seeing it again after 30 or so years and being amazed at some of the footage on display. It’s on Vudu right now for free (with ads) if you want to watch it.

It’s just a different kind of strangeness that I find in Aster’s work that’s playful in its nihilism.

Almost like a John Waters horror film in how far afield from reality everything is yet has a relatable core to its being.

Except for the Johnsons short. That was purely designed as an exercise in provocation.

There were parts of Hereditary I enjoyed but there were parts that were like you said, TIRING. Midsommer.......that one was just not for me. Fucking weird in my book.
