THE GUEST- another throwback to '80s and '90s "mysterious stranger" movies, right down to the synth-infused soundtrack. I'm sure certain sticks in the mud will dismiss it like Ted "Theodore" Logan's latest opus but it's pretty entertaining. I don't know if it performed well in the theater but if it did/does well on DVD it's primed for a series of DTV sequels.

Troll somewhere else with that Johnny Wick beef baby, I thought The Guest was dope. Leland Orser's mustache deserved a better life.

And that hot blonde Emmy Rossum type is in It Follows. Too bad VoD is still a week away.

PICKPOCKET (1959)

Fantastic French movie from Robert Bresson. It was a lot more existential and spiritual than I was expecting, but it was absolutely enthralling. The masterful way in which the pickpocketing was staged and filmed should be studied by pretty much any director wanting to show close-up work.

Highly recommended.

TIME BANDITS (1981)

Better and worse than I remembered. It gets a little to FRANTIC ENERGY RUNNING ABOUT LOUD LOUD LOUD at times, especially in the big climax against Evil, but it also has a more adult edge to some of the humor than i remembered, probably because it sailed over my head when I was a kid. David Warner is a scream in this, relishing every second of his screentime.

I forgot about the really, really dark ending. My wife (who watched it for the first time last night and kinda enjoyed the film) commented that she was surprised that the film would do that to the parents and then just end. You certainly wouldn't end a film like that today.

I haven't seen Time Bandits in a while, but I always liked Tales of Baron von Munchausen better. "They call me The Midget down 'ere. It's bliss."

Dead Rising: Watchtower. Needed more Frank, about 25 mins cut, and more Frank. That being said, it was definitely an adaptation of Dead Rising. Right down to the boss fights. Bonus points for the shot of the zombie dad eating his baby as it was strapped to his chest in a Baby Bjorn.

Deep Blue Sea. It's amazing how bad the sharks look in this yet Jaws still looks great.
