Metallica: Through the never. Not bad actually, I almost wish it was just a pure concert film as that portion was so slickly done that I enjoyed it a great deal. Story wasn't terrible but it was a bit random at times.

Made it half way through this last night. So far this is a poor lazy version of Pirates of Silicon Valley.

I don't hate Ashton in the role or anything (I'm one of the few that has no problem with the guy) but in the hour we watched they sped so fucking quick through everything that you barely had a chance to let anything sink in. That and having Woz be almost a minor background character makes me sad.

Will probably finish this tonight because I hate leaving movies unfinished but I'm just bummed that Pirates isn't available to stream anywhere or rent because I really want Lesley to watch that one. Noah and Anthony were really great in that one.

Finished this last night. What a pointless movie. There was potential but it was wasted. My biggest problem? How awesome Josh Gad was as Woz and how he was wasted throughout. His big emotional speech (while delivered really fucking well) fell flat because they didn't take the time to set up their friendship previously besides: "Hey, let's build a computer. Cool!" Really bummed. Hoping the Sorkin one or whatever does a better job of telling the story.

If all else fails I'll still have Pirates of Silicon Valley.

I hated Red Dragon. An ace cast wasted in service of a terrible, unsubtle adaptation and bland direction. It's not awful enough to be interesting, it's just... there.

Loved it. It isn't perfect (poor Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe are stuck delivering exposition every 20 minutes, and the final news broadcast seems overly hasty given the gravity of what just occurred), but on a pacing and technical level it's superb. The creatures have so much character and the set-pieces are beautifully shot - Hawaii especially was an excellently-judged ramp up and turning point. The sound design is exemplary and the whole film feels huge - Seamus McGarvey shot the shit out of this film. I don't know that I want a franchise out of it, but I'm damn happy with what we got with this - it's pretty much the best film of its type we've seen in years and (having just seen Honda's original again) a worthy continuation and reappraisal of the key character. Totally gonna snap this up on blu just to soak in the visuals and sound again, but there's other stuff going on in there too that is likely to be the subject of film studies theses comparing the '54 and '14 approaches for years to come.

Gareth Edwards' interview with the Kermode and Mayo film show/podcast is an excellent primer for this film, by the way and he's pretty much the nicest guy that ever stepped behind a camera, by the sounds of it.

I do know. Bring on cockroach aliens, Godzilla Jr, and the Mothra twins. I WANT IT ALL!!!

X-Men: All That Other Stuff Never Happened LOL

Odd pacing here and there and some butt-ass-buttbutt ugly digital camerawork but the flex of McAvoy and crew kept it running relatively smooth.

Quicksilver stole the show for me. I was not prepared.

Ending on such an upswing, and with cameos galore they sent me home pretty psyched for the next one.

Also: Jackman is turning into a stalloneshoulder.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Ok. I'm gonna be the whipping boy on this one.

I loved it. Like, its my favourite Spidey film. I can't get too heavily into why, but it had so much heart and the most visually exciting villain to date. It tried new things stylistically, Garfield was excellent, Stone was amazing and I even cried a couple of times. Other than Franchise Fatigue and a couple of canon librrties, I don't get the lukewarm reaction to this. I thought it looked and sounded stunning (Johnny Marr!) and was, for me, the best portrayal of Parker and his most interesting story yet.

Let the mocking commence, I guess.

STAR TREK INTO DUMBNESS- what an awesome looking turd. I really, really liked all the visual stuff but my daughter could write a more logical plot. Holy crap. And on a meta level the Harrison/Khan thing was just so dumb. Why deny that he's Khan throughout the whole production and promotion? No one cared and everyone expected it so it wasn't some amazing twist. Lots of annoying garbage in this thing.

Wasn't blown away by Days of Future Past. The opening sentinel attack is great and the Quicksilver Pentagon attack is really nice, though I still didn't think much to the actor or design. I didn't find the rest particularly compelling. Dinklage was good though.

Yeah, I'm tempering my expectations. I still think Quicksilver looks retarded, and the fact taht he's played by the emogimp from Horror Story doesn't help.

Still, I'll watch it. On Blu.

See, and I totally loved the new X-Men flick. It was borderline amazing, with some really impressive acting from all of the principal actors. Indeed, I would not be pissed off to see McAvoy get some awards nominations off of this, because he really delivers the goods here.

I can't stand McAvoy. I just see him acting all the time and with him, I can't get past it.

I thought McAvoy was one of the best things about the latest one.

The comparative small-scale to the action in comparison to the recent disaster porn hero films was a bit jarring, but on reflection, was a nice and refreshing alternative.
