  • Fucking hate NBK. It's a shrill, unwatchable movie. I'd rather watch SAVAGES again.

    • I loved NBK. Honestly might be the Stone movie I've seen the most.

      • I like the idea of NBK. The execution is all over the place unfortunately.

        • I prefer The Doors for my Ollie Stone movie.

          • THE DOORS is really close to being 'great'. It's just very, very bogged down with a lot of pretension, unfortunately.

All that. And I dug the Doors a lot, but I don't think it ranks in the same class as Platoon, JFK, or Nixon.

Also, totally agree w/ rerb re: NBK. Great idea, but SERIOUSLY flawed execution. Harrelson ws good from what I recall (only saw it once), but Juliette Lewis was her usual annoying self. Only movie she was in that she didn't manage to seriously drag down was Cape Fear. DeNiro kept that one aloft almost single handedly on the strength of his performance.
I like the way the line runs up the back of the stocking.

                Exactly like their music.

                • I'm totally the other way round on NBK. I think Stone's technique is what makes it great - Tarantino's version would have been much less interesting. I tried to rewatch The Doors in the last couple of years and couldn't get more than 10 minutes in. So I guess we're just coming at them from opposite angles there.

Nixon has so many great things about it and the script is well worth a read for anyone interested in screenwriting. For me, the film is hampered by the flashbacks to his childhood that were just awful, sub-Spielbergian simplification and became more grating as the film went on. I also don't personally think Hopkins was the man for the job on that one either. He stands out in a sea of awesome actors and performances as doing more of an impersonation than delving into the character. When you see what Langella did with Nixon a few years ago, it's clear how little the physical similarity matters. It's Casino to JFK's Goodfellas.
I experienced an invasion of my mind by a transcendentally rational mind, as if I had been insane all my life and suddenly I had become sane.

I have plenty of love for Platoon and NBK. I just can't take Sheen seriously in anything and he brings down Platoon for me.
You're on fucking crack if you can't appreciate an emotional analogy about US/Asian relations from a Vietnam Vet suffering from PTSD.

Salvador is the greatest Stone film because he was the most rushed on it. Well, this flick and "The Hand".

It allowed him to dial back the bullshit, beef up the lead role and actually tell a direct story.
