          • Cabin in the Woods:

            TOTALLY NOT OVERHYPED.

It's probably even better than you think. I fucking LOVED The Raid, but Cabin was so refreshing. Best horrot movie since Shaun of the Dead. Yup, even The Mist.

                        • BLACK RAIN.

Still holds up as a very solid late 80s Ridley Scott thriller. My big revelation this time out is just how amazingly good Michael Douglas is in the film. The part calls for a tremendous amount of range and he delivers it all, especially in the quieter scenes. The scene where he admits to Mas that yeah...he did take money, and Charlie never knew, is about as good as it gets. The ending is a little routine but so what...it was earned.

Damned good film, better than I remember.

Also: Douglas essentially plays the same character in BASIC INSTINCT. With some tweaking, it could very easily have been a sequel.

THIS. That was a great flick, very engrossing, very solid. Owe it a rewatch, maybe next week when I'm off.

                            • Glad I saw that one in the theaters when it came out. Things I liked:
                              - the characters. The main characters (good and bad) are all clearly defines and have arcs. They're interesting and have varied relationships with each other that develop and grow. The only character who should have been fleshed out more is Kate Capshaw's escort...she needed more to do.
                              - the production design is flawless, both in New York and in Japan. It's a gorgeous film.
                              - the humor, especially around Andy Garcia, is natural and character driven. His interplay with Mas is awesome.
                              - the action is decent and well shot. In particular, the scene where we first meet Sato in the restaurant and he kills that guy...it's a flawless scene of tension.

                              Great movie.

                              • Hans Zimmer dominated that soundtrack.
