  • It's not so much shitty as it is insulting. It's a competently made film with some good acting in it, but the overall 'hey let's watch a checklist of historical events while Jenny sells her ass' plotline is lazy as hell. It tries too hard to be clever.

It's not that Gump rats out Nixon, he's portrayed as a dumb dog doing what he thinks is required of him. It's not like Gump is actively trying to cause Watergate, he's just doing what's expected.

Pure mindless reaction rather than thoughtful decision.
I accept that. I haven't seen the film recently enough to counter your arguments with anything definitive, but this sounds right.

      • From Dusk, Till Dawn.

Still dig this movie pretty hard but I was reminded of the big thing that bothered me about this flick. The band. The band is rocking out vamp like with their sweet human/guitars and then all of a sudden they blow the fuck up for no reason. WHY?!

          • I dig the film too but I'd sure love to see a version where the promise of the first half is resolved in a way that doesn't involve vampires. The characters are TOO GOOD for the film to switch gears like that.

              • The second one isn't the worst thing in the world, but it's a pale imitator.

Call it Bucket List 2: NOW WITH VAMPIRES.

Starring the corpses of Jack Lemmon, Walt Matthau, Wings Hauser and George C. Scott. They're trapped in a giant bucket with some vampires. Will they escape to do crazy old people shenanigans or give into the temptation of immortality and eternal youth?

                  Soundtrack by Jefferson Starship.

                    • Love the first half. The rest is silly midnight fodder.

                      • Quick capsule reviews:

                        Crank 2

Insanity unleashed. About as good as the first one overall, but way more nasty. Statham does not get enough props for his comic ability - look at the scene where he approaches the gay guys walking their dog with an electric collar. He's hilarious in that scene, especially his nonchalant, 'Pair of cunts'.

                        Get Low

Really wonderful. A simple, slight tale elevated by classy cinematography, a fitting score and the casting of Duvall, Murray, Spacek and - believe - Lucas Black. Won't change your world and the ending is a little weak, but its a lovely 90 minutes. Worth it for Duvall and Murray alone.

                        Together (Tillsammans)

Just great. Really, really great. As a script, I can imagine it being too on the nose, but a brilliantly judged tone and across the board excellent actors make it something oddly profound and heartwarming. Proof that Mikael Nyqvist has always been the goods. This is a pretty well-seen film - can anyone recommend any other Lukas Moodyson films?

                        • Jackie Brown.

Definitely my favorite QT flick by a long stretch. Everything just works flawlessly. Robert is a goddamn pimp.

                          • JB was my favourite Tarantino until he made Inglourious Basterds.

That said, its still his most mature and restrained work and I'd like to see him tackle someone else's source material again. Forster and Grier are amazing here (it's the only film I genuinely like Grier in) and its one of De Niro's last hurrah's as far as quality work goes as well.

                            • I enjoy IB but I never want to watch it. Saw it in the theaters and then again when we bought it on blu, but I never have any inkling to revisit it. JB however I tend to watch once every few months. It's just soooo good.

                              • Green Lantern.

Completely understand why folks had issues with the Earth-bound stuff as opposed to the scenes in space and on Oa. Much as I like him, IMO, Reynolds was miscast as the lead, and his character arc was a joke (seriously, his ability to charm his way out of trouble or taking responsibility annoyed the fuck out of me). Mark Strong's Sinestro was wasted - HE should have been the big bad in this as opposed to Hector Hammond and Parallax. Also, the other GLs needed more screen time.

Wasted opportunity, and I hope WB learns from this if/when a sequel starts up.
