Martyrs.

Two movies for the price of one. The first half of the film is exceptionally well made, offering interesting, flawed, and tragic characters in a hellish situation.

The second half goes so far off the rails, it soured the good will established in the first. In leaving on an ambiguous note, one can surmise one of two outcomes. The problem with this is that the reasons revealed as to why such horrors are perpetrated is on its face so absurd it destroys any sense of suspense or engagement for the viewer, creating a climate of tedium for what amounts to some of the most pointless gore (which in itself is an oxymoron) I've ever encountered. I admire the intent and the audacity to attempt something so boldly different, but in order to break from convention, one must understand it in the first place.

Very strong start with a woeful end.

I still really liked it beside the brutal tonal change. Torture porn-wise, it's probably one of the best.

The first half was better than the usual gorn claptrap, I will definitely agree there.

What's funny is that 3/4 of the actors are from Québec, as it was shot here. Mademoiselle is one of the most harmless actress I know, so that was creepy as shit considering what her role was. And that last line of her was great. I definitely would have liked a better development of that side of that story, but I love the ambition of that movie.

Unlike that shitty and way overrated À l'Intérieur, one of the most poorly written movies I've seen, where every character is a retard.

No no, she 's like 40 something, where the protagonist is like 20ish. But dalle sure looked like hell in that movie.

Not a movie per se. 'Prohibition': the new doc from Ken Burns. It premiered this week. Highly recommended. It's only three parts and takes about five and a half hours to watch.

Informative and very entertaining. Of note...it does an excellent job of showing how history is repeating itself.

Burns' docs, like Attenborough's, are all appointment viewing.

'Only the Lonely' with John Candy, Ally Sheedy, Maureen O'Hara, and Anthony Quinn. It's a fairly minor rom com from the early 90s, but it does the job well. Candy makes for a solid comedic/dramatic lead in it. The real joy comes from seeing Anthony Quinn make the absolute most of his relatively.minor role.
