  • The Techno-Thriller Thread

Vin's thread about badassery made me think about the techno-thrillers that I used to read. Pretty much the only authors that I read of this genre were Tom Clancy and Craig Thomas.

Clancy started strong and churned out many definitive novels, but his last few books have been utter garbage. I haven't read all of Thomas's books, but those that I read were fantastic.

What other authors are worth the effort to seek out?

    Straight up espionage? Eric Ambler...

Military related? David Drake(the Hammer's Slammers series). Granted, it's futuristic, but no one... I repeat. NO ONE nails down the way soldiers are like he does.

Larry Bond is ok... but he's beginning to sound like Clancy Lite.

Heard good things about Larry Bond. 'Red Storm Rising', his collaboration with Tom Clancy, is a favorite.

I always liked Stephen Coonts for his Admiral Jake Grafton series.

The only Dale Brown book I ever liked was The Tin Man.

Tried getting into Stehpen's Hunter's Swagger series but couldn't get into them.

I remember some Dale Brown book about a souped up B-52 being good. 18 years ago.

Only reason I liked The Tin Man was that involved a former soldier trying avenge his Deputy Sheriff brother after he was wounded via a cyber suit.

And get this, the whole thing was set in Sacramento, CA!
