Good photo compression software?

I'm doing the Google but figured you guys might have some good recommendations too. I'm looking for a good cheap/free solution to taking batches of high res photos and compressing them to smaller sizes for purposes of fast loading/access through a gallery program. It also needs to be super simple. Like, imagine something your grandma could figure out and operate within a few minutes of training.
