  • Eat Here!!!

Ok - so often on the boards we throw out places that we love and think others should try. I know Matt has suggested to Rob and I Lion's Tap for awesome burgers. I want to recommend to anyone in MN Roma's in Mahtomedi. We had lunch there yesterday and had AMAZING spinach and artichoke dip for an app, I had a venetian turkey wrap and Rob had a pulled pork sandwich (can't remember the name of it). We also had excellent service - which made sense since our server was the owner!

My wife took me to a place in Springfield, NJ, at the Holiday Inn on Rt 22 West called The Happy Sombrero. I generally avoid Mexican restaurants, because I like my own versions of those dishes better. But this place had some slightly unusual recipes. Sure they had chimichangas and burritos & fajitas and all that. BUt they also had habanero sauced ribs (which I wanted but couldn't get b/c they were out of ribs; apparently this is their most popular dish). So I "settled" for the Tijuana style grilled sirloin. Holy shit! Nice salty, garlicky spice rub, tender, cooked to perfect medium steak. Creamy mashed potatoes, and broccoli sauteed in garlic & butter might have been the ebst thing on the plate, good as the steak was. For dessert I tried a key lime tequila pie. It was a round piece of key lime cheesecake, made w/ tequila and drizzled w/ a tequila/white chocolate syrup. I kind of expected the crisp, tangy fruit flavor you get from key lime pie w/ this, but it was much more subtle & subdued, w/ the tequila flavor behind everything. Good show all around, & I'm definitely going back for those ribs. My wife's flan was pretty damned good, too.
I like the way the line runs up the back of the stocking.

Come to Queens, NY. Seriously. Sure, Queens isn't exciting or fun in general, but believe it or not, we have the world's best freaking sushi here, I kid you not. It's a place called JJ's Asian Fusion, on 37th St. and 31st Avenue here in Astoria, and it's quite simply amazing. Their spicy tuna crunchy rolls, spicy salmon crunchy rolls, and edamame pot stickers have been hailed by NY Magazine (a notorious food-snob of a magazine) as some of the best you'll ever get. So come on to NY! Not only would I love to see you, but you'll find yourself in the lopsided situation of being in this bleak little Queens neighborhood, eating some of the best Japanese food you'll ever have.

El Rancho Grande. Kind of a mini-chain around here, but holy crap is it good! The service is fast and great; the margaritas are excellent; the chips and salsa are awesome. I've only tried the tacos and enchiladas so far, but both are amazing. And when I say the service is fast, I mean your food is out about 8 minutes after you order. And the margaritas are fantastic.

I hear Queens has the best Greek food in NY too...any hoo if you're ever in LA and need a place to eat let me know I have tons of them. My favorite meal is a little place called Johnnie's Pastrami, best Pastrami in LA, maybe the world.

There was Papadakis Taverna in San Pedro but that place is shutting down.

Papa Cristos on Pico and Normandie is one of the best...there's a place in Inglewood I want to try called Aliki's Taverna and there's always Ulyssess Voyage but that place is overpriced IMO....also there are a ton of good quick spots at the Hollywood Farmer's Market.

They opened a 5 Guys up in Northgate. But I want to challenge Rob to the 12 egg omelette over at Beth's Cafe.

I'm not a fan of eggs. You'd probably win.

That thing is the size of a small blanket! If either or both of you can finish that, I'll pay for it!
