I love Hal Ashby normally and I know so many people that put Harold and Maude on a pedestal.

As I said, you could do this and populate a list entirely from 80s genre films. You could also legitimately do it with artier fare. A film that you can watch any time doesn't have to just be fun. Something like Jesse James is hypnotic for me and another film that I've watched a couple of times every year since it came out, at the very least. From a visual and performance and music and sheer craft level, its impossible for me to not watch it. And that's how I judge a favourite film. If pushed, I'd say my 2 favourite films of all time are probably Die Hard and Raising Arizona. And as throwaway as both of those films may be to some, they encapsulate most of what great cinema is about.
Just wanted to throw that out there.
I experienced an invasion of my mind by a transcendentally rational mind, as if I had been insane all my life and suddenly I had become sane.

HAROLD AND MAUDE and BEING THERE are pretty much perfect movies.

Russ's comment made me laugh out loud.

great list, Jamie. I haven't seen MARTY yet but I can't point at any of them on your list and say 'this doesn't belong here.'

Also, for me this encapsulates what Podcaust/BDR is about for me.

                  In no order...
                  1. Dawn of the Dead (70's/2k's)
                  2. Hackers
                  3. Raiders of the Lost Ark
                  4. The Empire Strikes Back
                  5. Sin City - MARV SEQUENCE ONLY
                  6. American Movie
                  7. The Thing
                  8. Night of the Living Dead (60s/90s)
                  9. The Devil's Rejects
                  10. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
                  11. WarGames
                  12. First Blood
                  13. The Fifth Element
                  14. Ghostbusters
                  15. Friday the 13th Part IV
                  16. The Lawnmower Man
                  17. The Monster Squad
                  18. Shaun of the Dead
                  19. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
                  20. Reservoir Dogs

I have a feeling this will be edited at some point (as tomorrow I'll kick my own ass for forgetting some movie I LOVE AND OMG IT'S THE GREATEST), but off the top of my head if I had to choose only 20 movies to watch over and over these are the ones.

                  What are yours?
So let's see how much my list has changed in 2 years
                  1. Dawn of the Dead (70's/2k's)
                  2. Hackers
                  3. Raiders of the Lost Ark
                  4. The Empire Strikes Back
                  5. *Sin City - MARV SEQUENCE ONLY* - The Final Girls - NEW
                  6. American Movie
                  7. The Thing
                  8. Night of the Living Dead (60s/90s)
                  9. *The Devil's Rejects* - Jurassic Park (shut it, I love this fucking movie)
                  10. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
                  11. WarGames
                  12. First Blood
                  13. The Fifth Element
                  14. Ghostbusters
                  15. Friday the 13th Part IV
                  16. The Lawnmower Man
                  17. The Monster Squad
                  18. Shaun of the Dead
                  19. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
                  20. *Reservoir Dogs* - Jackie Brown (always a toss up but I've come to terms that I just prefer Jackie Brown over pretty much every other one of QT's movies)
"Looking like Nic Cage dressed in Kurt Cobain's closet. I mean that as a compliment" - BillyG

"Too cunty for wine bars, too dainty for real bars." - Anderson

Marty has one of the all-time great happy endings. Easy to see why people fell in love with it in '55 and why Borgnine took the Oscar.

He threw a prolonged fit about a year or so ago because I didn't agree with his assessment of Sideways. He then raged about how he's always persecuted and we were turning into CHUD. Then, he bailed.

Hopefully, he swallowed a fistful of Midol and cooled the fuck down.

It's not like you were helping. I get that no-bullshit thing, but abrasive is also I term I can coin you with when you're debating with him.
