        Correct. I mentioned I rebooted, but i didnt' say that it is now working after the reboot.

          IMHO Cd drives are real basic devices and dont need drivers to work. Windows xp should be "smart" enough to pick it up and install a generic device driver. i would suggest looking at the ribbon cable(wide flat cable) for kinks and check to see if its plugged in all the way...

            I would also like to mention that if you are used to just push on the tray to close the open drive that could eventually wear the gears down and cause this problem. I think someone mentioned that gears could be the problem.
