  • And either the editing was shit or they kept using the "one second there's no one here and the next WHOA WHERE DID ALL THESE CULT GUYS COME FROM" gag way too much.

    • Finally re-watched Get Out. Still just so good. And knowing what was coming let me see a lot of details that don't come out on first watch. Also, he literally picked cotton to save his life. Don't know how that got by me on first viewing.

      • We did TOMORROW NEVER DIES last night.

This is a pretty solid, competent effort overall that unfortunately suffers from having a fairly weak villain and an utterly terrible henchman. Elliot Carver, as a concept, is interesting, but he's severely under-written and not really thought through enough. The idea that he'd undertake all of these plans just to get exclusive media rights in China seems goofy. It's like Dr. Evil holding the world hostage for the ridiculous sum of one million dollars. Considering his reach and his influence, I'd have thought that a global plan to take over all media and control the masses would have made for a better (and more Bond-like) plan. Oh well, at least Pryce is game to have fun with it.

And then there's Stamper, one of the worst henchmen of the franchise. It's like the writers said 'give us a Red Grant clone' and then left it at that, forgetting to give the character any personality. It doesn't help that the actor playing him is a complete void of personality, presence, or charisma.

Those two characters aside, the film is pretty good. The action scenes (especially the parking lot car chase and the motorcycle chase) are very well executed, even if they lack the oomph that someone like Martin Campbell could have brought to them. The final bit on the stealth boat isn't spectacular but it's competent enough. There's a distinct lack of tension in the film that keeps it from being thrilling, but it's always watchable.

It helps that Brosnan is really good in this. He feels more assured here than he did in GOLDENEYE, and his characterization of Bond is a lot more consistent. His haircut also helps.

Michelle Yeoh is also a welcome addition. She's treated as a serious, competent character...an equal to Bond. She holds her own just fine and acts as a true partner with Bond. Yeoh also has some solid chemistry with Brosnan, and it really feels like the two of them had a lot of fun doing their scenes together.

Teri Hatcher is also a nice addition. I thought that she and Brosnan did a good job of showing a past connection without having to go into exposition dumps. As an added touch, I thought that Brosnan did a great job of reacting to her death in his scenes with Kaufman.

The David Arnold score is very good, incorporating a lot of classic Barry themes while being its own thing. The theme song, however, is one of the weaker entries in the franchise, and Sheryl Crow botches a lot of the high notes (in my opinion). The k.d. lang song over the end titles is much stronger.

        A solid, mid-tier effort.

I won't defend it, aside from throwing in some of the stranger things (death cults, alternate dimensions, dark gods that we can't comprehend the reasoning of, body horror) in the genre into the mix.

The characters were strange as well, and usually not in the best way. The entire time I was wanting the film to follow the hunter father and son who tangled with the TRIANGLE GANG more than hipster haircut cop.

I just don't think it deserves the vitriol it gets.

          • Justice League. I didn't hate it as much as I did in the theater, and I feel like a battered housewife with these movies at this point. There is some great stuff mixed with TERRIBLE shit in this movie but you can tell at one point it made more sense than what we got. The shitty lip CGI is much more distracting at home too which was a bummer but everything with The Flash still worked like gangbusters even if I wanted to hate that dude. I just can't.

The bits of humor peppered in don't really work EXCEPT for the scene where Flash saves WW and ends up on top of her awkwardly. That was still fucking hilarious. OTherwise they all felt out of place.

I just hope one day to get some more deleted scenes from Snyder's version. I want more Cyborg dammit.

Aquaman is still terrible. Momoa was a BAD choice.

Also, I'm not sure if it's just me, but the greenscreen work in this is abysmal. Half of the shots look so goddamn fake. It was distracting last night.

The cop was the worst thing in the goddamn movie. As were all of the reaction shots. None of these actors were acting like they were in the same movie. that was my problem.

                • Count me in with the Tomorrow Never Dies love.

Weird how Brosnan started off so strong, then went on autopilot at the midpoint of his tenure. That's how fast he got fed up with it all and was bad-mouthing them privately and publicly. One could understand why the Broccolis fired his ass.

                    • The sneering shitface he makes is pretty wonderful.

Underrated performance but a pretty lame villain backstory.

Miranda Frost and Xenia Onatopp were the last great femme fatales of the dog and PPK show.

Craig hasn't even had one yet. (The nut-bludgeon doesn't count.) Th' fuck?

Oh, hells to the yes. Eva Green was all kinds of great in Casino Royale. So the sex, too, in a quiet subdued way.

Yes indeed. But as far as a classic bond girl villain, Xenia Onatop was the last. I think.

Sure. They caught her before the Burton was unleashed.

But her character was much more subdued compared to the likes of a Mayday or a Bambi and Thumper.
