  • If they had made it so
      Spoiler: spoilers
that the other station was occupying the same space as the main station and the multiverse versions of these people were aware and trying to get rid of the imposter station
that would have been something worthwhile.

Apparently, those question are getting answered in Overlord aka Cloverfield 4.

Given the harsh troubles that Paramount is facing, we might start getting more of these faster on Netflix.

      • I've been trying for three nights to watch THE VOID. I should probably take that as a sign but I remember the trailer made it look pretty neat.

It's a huge disappointment. I fell asleep the first time we tried to watch it, and was on my phone most of the second time.

            • I kinda liked it. It's not perfect or anything, but it had some weird stuff in it that was off the beaten horror path.

The ending totally pulling a The Beyond also helped.

              • To each their own. While I appreciated the practical effects, nothing in this movie worked and it's cardinal sin was that it was just overall boring.

                  • GOLDENEYE

Maybe this should be re-titled EXPLOSIONEYE; everything explodes in this movie. I never noticed it before but seriously, things are constantly exploding in this film. It doesn't matter how big or how small the set piece is, things are going to explode. My wife and I were laughing over this by about the midpoint of the movie.

Overdone explosions aside, this is a really solid entry. I'm a sucker for all of the moments in the franchise where other 00 agents are referenced, so having 006 be a full fledged character is a real treat for me (even if he does become the bad guy). The plot itself is very strong and is presented in such a way that it requires Bond himself to be skillful and take an active role in bringing things to a resolution, so I was very satisfied in regards to my 'Bond is competent' requirement.

The bad guys are all solid.
                    - Sean Bean is always fun whenever he's in 'bad buy' mode, and he gets to go over the top here. The only problem is that you want more of him, and I always come away from the film kinda wishing that we could have gotten a 006 prequel movie where we could just watch him in action on a standard mission.
                    - Famke Janssen is a riot as Xenia Onatopp. Gotta love how she gets sexually charged by violence, and her 'he's going to derail us' moment is probably her singular moment as an actress.

If the film has a weak link (apart from all of the explosions), it's really Brosnan. He's good in the role but you can tell that he's wanting to go even darker with his characterization. Just look at his facial expressions and you can tell that this is an even darker version of Bond than we got with Dalton. Unfortunately, the film won't let him go that dark, so he's forced to be lighthearted at many points in the film which KINDA work....kinda. But there's a seething rage in this Bond that never really gets to be cut loose. It's unfortunate that Brosnan wasn't allowed to go this dark because Craig definitely showed that a dark Bond can really work.

Oh, the other weak link is the music. When Serra embraces a more traditional orchestration, he's fine. When he goes overly electronic (like in the opening car chase), he's horrible. The theme song is OK...it's an average tune elevated by a fantastic vocal performance by Tina Turner.

'Too many explosions' aside, the film is very well directed by Martin Campbell. I liked his movies prior to this entry (NO ESCAPE is an especially enjoyable B Action movie) so I was excited to see him as the director of this one back in 1995. He delivered the goods here and he did an even better job a decade later on with CASINO ROYALE.

                    • Agreed on the comedy bits. Some work well, like the "foreplay" line in the steam room between Bond and Xenia, but then you have the "Muffy" tattoo, Minnie Driver butchering "Stand By Your Man" and fucking Boris being Boris and being allowed to be Boris the entire way through without somebody slamming the butt of a rifle into his face.

That said, Pierce was great at picking up the character from where Dalton handed it off. At least in this one anyway. The rest of his tenure is pretty mediocre.

I kinda like the electro score in the opening sequence. Same with the train as well as the Soviet graveyard.

It felt true to the story's cold war ties.

But yeah, the hillside WICKY WICKY WAH WAH shit was not the best choice.

                              • So fucking bad. Horror fans that defend that (sorry Russ) confuse the shit out of me. Past the score/practical effects everything else was terrible including the STUPID CHARACTER CHOICES that were made. Ugh. I was so mad after that movie.
